Social Media: Society

Media influence as discussed throughout the weeks has covered the issue of media influence on its audience both the positives and the negatives. Society adapts to growing technology and so does technology to society. With every large media outlet, comes advantages and disadvantages.

In the modern world we are confined to our space, our surroundings but what media does is that it helps us branch out for example Facebook does this without a doubt because communication is the staple basis of Facebook and the same applies to Twitter, and Instagram. These social networks pave the way for a one world culture of social network users. The problem is the downsides such as Bullying, a mere image of the world, depression, etc. The world moves forward and so does humanity with internet and world wide web.

Looking to old media we have our advantages of course like social networking, with the downsides always ever present and alarming. Old media such as TV and Film prove today that marketing of audiences is the purpose of old media, like new. TV and Films have long been discussed general in terms of purpose and content. What TV and Film does is that it expresses human themes, its realism and covers day to day events. However some exploit the means of marketing an audience. As a result people become almost brainwashed in a dramatic effect because old media and new media tells us almost what is normal and what is wrong. For example taking numerous selfies at a time is normal nowadays but go back ten years ago seeing someone taking selfies of themselves would certainly be seen as out of the ordinary and against the trend. Trends tells us what and what is not in trend. To be in trend is to be hip, to be out of trend is to be seen as bizarre and strange in the 21st century. Even groups of people that become apart of a subculture, is all a trend it is not strange nor is it a rebellious statement on society, because its not its just normal nowadays.

In the 21st looking at trends, social media is the creator of trends, whether it be started on Facebook, twitter or any other social network it happens. Old media is slowly dying out, not speaking of TV and Film of course because those two media prosper and will always for a long time. I am speaking of Radio, newspaper. Radio is not necessarily dying but it is less popular due to TV and online radio. Newspapers are dying due to online editions, basically what I am saying here is that new media, online newspapers will become more popular in years to come replacing print.

Below is a video, about the mass influence of Social Media

With social media, the audience is seen as passive but as a new media and English student I have to look at these things in depth. What I will say before leaving this post is that new media is the future and old media will always be present, but life will have its ups and downs like new media. Nothing is perfect but as a audience to media, we are reasons it is produced whether it is to make money, persuade us to buy something or join a community, there’s always a purpose. To conclude today, social media and new media is very important to society.

Social Media; Copyright

Social Media as the blog has discussed thoroughly in previous posts its advantages in terms of connectivity and professionalism. However we have bordered on the problems with social media and in particular with problems relating to new media issues of cyber bullying and propaganda. Now I want to look at the issue and its a very important and problematic issue because of its context, the problem and topic today is the issue with Copyright and social media.

Copyright 2015

Copy right law has been put into action thoroughly throughout the development and growth of the social media giant. The boom of social media meant people were able to upload content onto websites such as Facebook and Twitter, Instagram and Flickr without a problem. This paved the way for people to market themselves professionally, from artists to entrepreneurs the list was endless and still is to this day. However with such accessibility to these social media market to market yourself and products copyright became a major problem because people were exposing themselves to the world wide web and their content can be viewed and copyrighter illegally and legally on some grounds.

The access to such vast magnitude of social networks raises the stakes and issues of copyright and fair use. Sharing has become both genius and problematic. Sharing content is useful and very useful when publishing and publicizing whatever work that it is whether it be professional photographs, artwork, news, writing etc. It becomes a problem however on the ground of copyright because people can easily take your work and publish it as their own.

Pinterest

Pinterest is the fastest growing social media sharing platform. Pinterest allows users to share photos and videos from other users. Images that are not copyrighter and protected are subject to copyright infringement.

To quote: “Facebook claims more than 950 million users1 currently, 46 percent of whom are aged 45 or older,2, and Twitter has grown to more than 140 million monthly users,3 58 percent of whom are aged 35 or older.4 A relative newcomer to the group, Pinterest is now the third most popular social networking site behind Facebook and Twitter.5

Growing exceptionally fast since its launch in 2009, Pinterest now boasts more than 20 million users,6 of whom 64 percent are aged 35 or older and roughly 80 percent of whom are women. Not to be outdone, men are flocking to websites such as Manteresting.com, a pinboard style site similar to Pinterest but designed with more traditionally “manly” interests in mind.7

“Sharing” is the idea behind websites such as Pinterest, Facebook, Twitter, and scores of others. Users share information, pictures and videos which are uploaded, downloaded, transferred, pinned and, well, shared with others who have similar interests.”- Article Link: http://www.bna.com/social-media-and-fair-use-pinterest-as-a-case-study-by-mary-ann-l-wymore-greensfelder-hemker-gale/

Pinterest has become a problem due to its rising popularity and growth in the world. Videos and photos are uploaded continuously on Pinterest. As a result people expose their content to copyright infringement. Facebook has also become a problem due to copyright problem due to sharing options and accessibility.

To briefly conclude, Copyright is a problem like privacy so as a result the social media platforms like Pinterest and Facebook need to take action to ensure content stays within the laws of Copyright ethical practice. As we upload more content we endanger our content to worldwide sharing and copyright infringement. We have to be more conscious and aware of what we are publishing and posting online because it is easy for another social media user of Pinterest or Facebook other, to use your photos for their sharing. As a result we do have to become more conscious and ensure that our photos and videos are copyrighted and protected for our own welfare and benefit.

Social Media Problems; Facebook Privacy

Facebook Privacy

The media has given the world many down the years in terms of connection and creativity great benefits and resources to use a world that is vastly changing technologically and socially. When social media boomed mid 21st century we saw prosperity in terms of connection and employment. With social media we are allowed connect to the world within seconds, anywhere in the world. However the big problem when it comes to social media, new media is the problem of privacy issues. Facebook in particular has led users to take case suing Facebook on the grounds of Privacy breaching.

With social media our lives are publicly monitored by our surrounding environment due to social media, platforms like Facebook, Twitter, Linkdn, Flicker, Instagram gives us accessibility. But its these platforms that can intrude on our privacy and indeed Facebook privacy is a problem we have to face everyday on social media use.

To not use social media we may be viewed as an outsider due to the fact it is everyone’s mind that we as people need social media in order to accomplish and live in this world however it is not necessarily true. However the people that use these platforms do expose us to the world wide threat of privacy breach and copyright issues.

Looking at some cases of privacy we have to look at problems associated with Facebook which has from 2007 to present is regularly investigated and criticised due to its privacy issues. In 2010 Facebook was criticised due to the findings by Electrical Frontier Foundation which found that Facebook could get information saved to a Facebook profile even if the information was not intended.

Facebook has also been criticised for its app Messenger. The app provides Facebook with the following information about users of the app:

  • Access to geo location
  • Access to personal contacts on device
  • Access to Personal text messages on device
  • Access to private messages for data collection
  • Access to device camera and video camera
  • Access to audio and sound device

The video below covers and focuses on the privacy concerns relating to the messenger app.

As Facebook is global the problems with social media grows and in particular the problems with Facebook ever grows stronger due to its massive popularity. Facebook also has been criticised for Facebook friend lists. Friend lists on Facebook profiles are not private regardless if they are intended to be private and not public. The following article criticises and comments on the issue of Friend lists and privacy. Link to the article: http://mashable.com/2014/06/02/facebook-friends-list-privacy/

To conclude as I have discussed there is obviously problems with Facebook and its privacy settings and terms. What we have to understand is that Facebook is so large that it is always going to use private information for data collecting. And when we create a Facebook profile regardless if we deactivate it, the profile will always exist in Facebook data collection, it can never be deleted by Facebook. Facebook will grow stronger and so will its privacy issues. Next week I will be discussing Social Media Copyright problems, issues.

The Music Video and its effect on the adolescent Female body

The worldwide media phenomenon has taken the world by the neck and surely the effects on the viewership of such media such as social media and music videos, TV and movies have a detrimental effect are evident. We have to look at the music industry for example as a core media phenomenon that not only gives us music but gives us subliminal media messages. The good of music industry is that it provides us with satisfaction entertainment wise however the other end of the sword is the effects it has and influences it has on its audience, in particular its effects on Female body image.

The modern day music industry boomed in the 1980’s due to the introduction of MTV,  a music TV station and platform which provided youth with easy access to music especially pop and rap which grew in popularity in the 1990’s and this appealed to a wide audience of teenagers and adolescents due to MTV in some regard. Over the next 25 years, the music industry grew in strength and in order for it to prosper it breached out to other platforms that being YouTube especially which was a major and still a major player for music videos and their profits. And it was MTV that had a major impact on the music world, as Randy Otis notes on MTV and its impact ” One station that has had a great impact on American culture is MTV, or music television. It arrived in 1981 and sparked a whole host of studies examining a wide range of topics. The station has since changed so that it is now more of a reality channel than music video, but it marked the beginning of a new era of that aspect of television. With the international growth of MTV’s popularity, its influence has become a world-wide phenomenon. Even in 1996, there was evidence that showed that African American teenagers watched approximately 3.3 hours of music videos per day (Peterson, Wingood, DiClemente, Harrington, Davies 2007″ Link to article: http://https://otisrandy.wordpress.com/2012/12/14/rap-videos-and-the-effect-on-female-adolescent-body-image/

Nowadays the music industry is ever strong before but it comes with a cost, old music is dying along with traditional and honest music that depicts great music and doesn’t focus on the exterior like body images and looks. I want to look at body image. In the music industry, the business through its videos depict the following representation of the female body:

  • False image of the female body
  • What is beautiful and what is not
  • Sexual desire
  • Lust
  • False images and depiction of the female body
  • Sexual need
  • Money represented with female body
  • Exaggerated and fake illusions of the female body
  • Manipulation of female conscious on female body image

The representation of women in music videos tells women what is beautiful, what is not, how to look “good” and to alter and change images on the body. Like in the model world women look to it and contemplate what is beautiful and not. Videos by Nicki Minaj and Britney Spears among many others fuel the female representation epidemic in terms of their own body image and lyric. The video below is an example of the female body representation in terms of sexual appeal and body image.

The video depicts an example of music industry depiction of female body, in that the female body can be used as a weapon to lure men into a trap. It’s a formulae used by music videos on a regular basis. The video is extremely bleak and it’s a sad epidemic in the music world, which has to be changed but I am afraid to say the effects on women from music videos has been very impactful that it will never change and the music world and its videos will continue to tell you what is right and what is beautiful in body images and it will obviously turn the tables and tell us that being “not beautiful” is the real beauty.
The video below is another example of body image influence on the adolescent female body. The video is of Australian born rapping sensation Iggy Azalea and Latin superstar Jennifer Lopez dancing seductively while embracing and flaunting their very beautiful “Booty”. the video says well its nice to have a big booty which every man wants and desires. Having a big booty is sexy and outstanding. Don’t get me wrong I think its beautiful but the approach the video adapts is very shallow and bleak. It says in its lyrics “Its his birthday, give him whatever he asks for”. It’s on the lines of pornographer In terms of the video images and lyrics, its a sad realisation that this is music industry of today. It is not entertaining music,  it is sex exploitation on camera for profit.

The music industry is only in existence due to profit and once a formulae works and earns profit the music industry it will repeat that formula through using images of the female body. In brief, the music videos do not influence every women, it is not possible but to a large majority it does and especially on youth because youth are very vulnerable and passive to such images in Music videos. Its a danger but the music machine will not stop, and that is a sad realisation. In conclusion the videos do have an effect on the adolescent female body because girls and women of today are severely conscious of body image which to an extent is healthy but in other cases it can become unhealthy trying to live up to music videos “allusions” and depictions of the female body. Overall as media consumers both male and female we have to become more conscious and aware of the music media videos of manipulation in terms of female body images because it is just not real in reality.

Social Media War With ISIS Propaganda

ISIS

Today in the world of politics the world faces many issues with regard to the threat of propaganda and war on the horizon when we look at the situation in the Syria and Iraq with regard to the terrorist organisation that is ISIS or referred also as ISIL and the Islamic state of Iraq and Syria. The situation with ISIS is of international and domestic concern due to the rising strength and threat that ISIS possesses. What is most concerning from my point of view is its propaganda machine on social media and how ISIS masterfully manipulates the media and how it encourages people from all around to fight with the Islamic state.

The Islamic state uses many of the most popular of social media platforms to advertise their ideology and propaganda to the world for everyone to see. There aim is simple to recruit fighters from Muslim communities but also importantly ISIS social media targets western people, in particular the Islamic state appeal to people that have been abused by society due to their religion or other. The Islamic State regularly posts updates and propaganda material on a daily basis in order to branch out and recruit and  “Influence” as many people as it can due to its need of fighters in the regions of Syria and Iraq. Islamic state uses media to recruit western fighters to fight the coalition and international community which includes the United States, Britain, France, Germany, Russia and Jordan among many other countries. The fight is intensifying between the coalition and ISIS but so is the war on tackling ISIS on social media platforms.

The video above shows how ISIS are using social media especially Twitter to subject people and influence people from the west to fight with ISIS in Syria and Iraq. ISIS have a strong control on the way they run their social media campaign and this is especially true when you look at the difficulties Twitter and other social media platforms have in  fighting these pages and profiles.

The ISIS propaganda machine is a strong element, severely crucial to their organisation because they recruit fighters primarily through social media and propaganda to fight the coalition and Syrian and Iraq army. Examples of their propaganda is ever evident in the news for example we can look at how ISIS uses “Violence” to influence fighters to come and fight with them. An example of this is the brutality of ISIS execution videos most notably the beheadings of western Journalists by the masked Islamic state terrorist “Jihadi John” who has recently been identified as Muhammad Emwazi who originates from London, UK. The videos are very distressing and very disturbing but its these execution videos that not only recruit foreign fighters but it sends out a chilling message to the international community and world of the threat of ISIS in our countries that we live in.

Jihadi JohnJihadi John’s image is used as a tool to strike fear to the international community and anyone that challenges ISIS, the videos are sheer propaganda through their depiction of brutal inhumanity and disregard to the innocent in the videos. What ISIS does is that it uploads these videos and within seconds the videos are headline news on social media and TV. Throughout its campaign ISIS implies professional editing of its videos. ISIS regularly posts genocidal vidoes including mass executions, and other despicable and evil videos.

Below is an example of a twitter ISIS account

Source: http://www.ibtimes.com/centcom-twitter-hack-official-account-back-online-after-breach-isis-sympathizers-1781040

Source: https://ibrabo.wordpress.com/2014/04/03/the-new-battleground-for-isis-facebook/

ISIS uses Twitter and Facebook regularly to post updates and propaganda videos to these accounts which is highly of concern to the international community.

TACKLING ISIS’s SOCIAL MEDIA CAMPAIGN

The international community is tackling the threat of ISIS on the grounds in Syria and Iraq but the war on social media is proving a difficult war due to the fact ISIS are constantly creating new accounts throughout the world which makes it difficult in defeating ISIS on the internet and on social media platforms. The world is not afraid of ISIS and so the fight is being delivered to ISIS. Twitter and Facebook are fighting hard to tackle ISIS media on social media. Over a thousand ISIS accounts are taken down each day on twitter but the problem here is that they are created again. Spreading of videos is being censored and the crimes to which ISIS activate has been intensified. https://ibrabo.wordpress.com/2014/04/03/the-new-battleground-for-isis-facebook/ Blog covers the war with ISIS on Facebook, it is a great read especially because it deals with Facebooks war on ISIS and how ISIS advertises itself on Facebook. Worth noting also the hacking group named “Anonymous” are also helping in the fight against ISIS on social media. The group currently has intercepted and taken down numerous ISIS accounts and also maybe giving location of ISIS members, militants.

The organization named SITE is an monitoring intelligence group that pushes major social media sites like Facebook and Twitter to become stricter, take down and degrade ISIS accounts. Link to page https://news.siteintelgroup.com/

So to finish off, ISIS has certainly caused international concern on social media through its propaganda and brutal videos but as we can see looking to the future it will be a long war with ISIS but it will be  Inevitable ISIS will be defeated and destroyed on social media and the world. Good will prevail in the world, and ISIS propaganda and militant will be ridden from this earth forever.

Trends; The Good and Bad

Source: www.emarkable.ie
Source: http://www.emarkable.ie

Trends today is ever evident in the medium of the world-wide web. Such trends have paved the way for us to communicate with each other and to follow trends and norms within the social media platforms. Trends according to social media, are tools or fashion that influences people how to behave or to become involved within that trend. Such trends are vast, examples of trends include Instagram posting, twitter use and online Facebook activity of posting such content which is a trend in itself. I want to look briefly at trends, the good and.

Instagram

Instagram is photo sharing, video sharing social media platform that allows people to post high quality photos through filters which provides excellent quality to the photos. Instagram can upload photo, post within seconds. The popularity of Instagram is massive and indeed more popular than Facebook because of its easy accessibility due to it being directed at mobile, iPhone and tablet users. People can upload photos within seconds from their device. However the downside to Instagram is the matter of professionalism because anyone who posts on Instagram are allowed to edit and add professional effects to their photos, this raises the question does this platform replace professional photography, the answer is probably no, but it is a question to be respected because with such a vast amount of users professionalism can be altered and subjected. But with regard to speaking of Instagram we have to acknowledge the benefits;

  • Connectivity through photos and videos
  • High Quality produced photos
  • Filter effects
  • Useful for photographers and artistes and general public
  • Used as a promotional and marketing device

Facebook and the Viral Trend

Facebook as we have discussed we a massive social media giant with an online magnitude of 1 billion users worldwide. The Facebook machine is a great benefit to everyone who uses it. The Facebook trend spanned early in the 21st century and today it is so powerful its trend is a machine particular when discussing Facebook and its popularity of Trends we have to look and acknowledge its Viral Trends influence on its audience .

Trends include the Ice Bucket Challenge, the “Selfie”, and the norm of posting statuses about what we are doing etc. The ALS Ice Bucket Challenge presented a trend that started in 2014, and it raised awareness for ALS disease which was a great viral trend that was for a very good cause. But I want to look at the bad side to media influence, trend influence, I want to look at the “Neck Nomination” which was a viral trend that caused uproar due to its stupidity and utter danger. The idea was one erson, who was nominated by a friend had to drink an alcoholic beverage in one go. When finished the nominated person you go on to nominate someone, others. Others followed the trend in some cases there was fatal consequences because several people died in relation to the neck nomination challenge. The video bellow centres on the Neck Nomination Trend and its connection to 5 deaths.

As above you can see the obvious danger of the Neck Nomination viral trend, this being a viral danger.

Other trends include Youtube, Linkdn, other and Twitter which in particular is very popular regarding hashtag trends. So what we can say here regarding trends, viral on the web, on social media, they do present great benefits in terms of it important message and its importance in raising awareness on important issues in society. However, trends have their downside like anything else, so we have to be consciously aware and to be cautious, aware in terms of what these trends do and their dangers toward ourselves, influence and in general society. Tune in next week where I will delving into the issue of war on social media platforms.
