Social Media as the blog has discussed thoroughly in previous posts its advantages in terms of connectivity and professionalism. However we have bordered on the problems with social media and in particular with problems relating to new media issues of cyber bullying and propaganda. Now I want to look at the issue and its a very important and problematic issue because of its context, the problem and topic today is the issue with Copyright and social media.

Copy right law has been put into action thoroughly throughout the development and growth of the social media giant. The boom of social media meant people were able to upload content onto websites such as Facebook and Twitter, Instagram and Flickr without a problem. This paved the way for people to market themselves professionally, from artists to entrepreneurs the list was endless and still is to this day. However with such accessibility to these social media market to market yourself and products copyright became a major problem because people were exposing themselves to the world wide web and their content can be viewed and copyrighter illegally and legally on some grounds.

The access to such vast magnitude of social networks raises the stakes and issues of copyright and fair use. Sharing has become both genius and problematic. Sharing content is useful and very useful when publishing and publicizing whatever work that it is whether it be professional photographs, artwork, news, writing etc. It becomes a problem however on the ground of copyright because people can easily take your work and publish it as their own.

Pinterest

Pinterest is the fastest growing social media sharing platform. Pinterest allows users to share photos and videos from other users. Images that are not copyrighter and protected are subject to copyright infringement.

Not to be outdone, men are flocking to websites such as Manteresting.com, a pinboard style site similar to Pinterest but designed with more traditionally “manly” interests in mind.7

“Sharing” is the idea behind websites such as Pinterest, Facebook, Twitter, and scores of others. Pinterest has become a problem due to its rising popularity and growth in the world. Videos and photos are uploaded continuously on Pinterest. As a result people expose their content to copyright infringement. Facebook has also become a problem due to copyright problem due to sharing options and accessibility.

To briefly conclude, Copyright is a problem like privacy so as a result the social media platforms like Pinterest and Facebook need to take action to ensure content stays within the laws of Copyright ethical practice. As we upload more content we endanger our content to worldwide sharing and copyright infringement. We have to be more conscious and aware of what we are publishing and posting online because it is easy for another social media user of Pinterest or Facebook other, to use your photos for their sharing. As a result we do have to become more conscious and ensure that our photos and videos are copyrighted and protected for our own welfare and benefit.
